Pierre Larousse (1817–1875) was a prominent French educator, grammarian, and lexicographer, best known for his contributions to the field of education and language through his development of the Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXe Siècle, commonly known as the Larousse Dictionary.
Born in Toucy, Yonne, on October 23, 1817, Pierre Larousse was the son of a blacksmith. His early education was in a local school, where he excelled in languages and literature. He later moved to Paris to continue his education, studying at the École Normale Supérieure, where he was exposed to the rigorous academic environment that shaped his future endeavors.
After completing his studies, Larousse embarked on a teaching career, initially working as a teacher in Versailles. However, his magnum opus was the Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXe Siècle, which began publication in 1866 and was completed posthumously.
